Something Interesting in an Ordinary Place
Updated: Dec 8, 2021
I was recently asked “What’s your favorite analogy for talking about the benefits a great photographer, like yourself, can bring to a campaign?” I was stumped, I never thought about it before. I pondered and searched for something that spoke to me and the way I view photography, until I came across the following quote:
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” –Elliott Erwitt
Photography is more than just taking the first images that presents itself. Typically, I will scout the location, finding angles that complement each room and the furniture that is there. However, even after finding a composition there may be additional work that may need to be done.
Furniture may need to be moved or adjusted, cords might need to be unplugged, decor possibly rearranged, and so much more. Even if the interior is staged and looks beautiful to the human eye, it may not read well by the camera. This is because we are trying to create a 3D space in a 2D plane. By taking the time to find or make an interesting scene, the photos will generally make the home present better and draw interest from the viewer.
